Big Kid Routine — Daily Routine Cards for Preschoolers

Between ages 3 and 5, your child's brain goes through a surge in planning, self-control, and flexible thinking. Predictable routines are where these skills get daily practice.

These 31 routine cards build real independence — from checking the weather and packing a backpack to reflecting on the day and preparing clothes for tomorrow.
Each card targets a specific skill that research links to school readiness.

Every card includes a "Why this works" explanation for parents — so you know exactly what's happening in your child's brain at each step.

Why It's Different

  • Science explanation for every card — your child sees a picture, you understand what the brain is doing
  • Cards other routine charts don't have: "Check the Weather" (3 brain skills in 30 seconds), "Talk About the Day" (autobiographical memory), "Prepare Clothes for Tomorrow" (future planning), "Deep Breaths Together" (self-regulation)
  • Not just "brush teeth" — each routine has a developmental twist: timer challenges, self-monitoring, storytelling, invented games
  • Designed for 3–5 year olds specifically, not a one-size-fits-all chart for ages 2–6

How to Use

Print the cards on cardstock. Cut along the lines. Laminate for durability.

Choose one of the two routine boards, attach at your child's eye level. Add velcro dots or magnets.
Start with morning only — 5–6 cards. Add afternoon and evening over the next week.
Your child chooses the order within each block, moves the cards, and owns the routine. Your job: be nearby, not in charge.
